Miguel Angel Asturias Academy

Description

The Miguel Angel Asturias Academy is a non-profit K-12 school that serves low-income students in and around Xela. Located in Zone Three, we are a fifteen minute walk from the center of town. Founded in 1994 by Jorge Chojolan, an Ashoka Fellow, the Asturias Academy uses popular education so that our students can transform their own lives. We serve over 300 students and also have a library, technical education zone and a community clinic.

Volunteer Opportunities

Short and mid-term volunteers are needed to assist in English Classes as conversational partners, as well as help with promoting reading. We also have needs with development, social media outreach and web/graphic design. Folks who are passing through town are welcome to join us for a tour of the school.

Requirements

There are no specific requirements, but basic Spanish or better will be necessary for education volunteers. Social media/graphic design volunteers can have any level of Spanish.
